Diary 1

I met everyone at the tennis court today. I was able to attend this meeting because I’m from a third estate. When The Convocation of the Estates General came to a conclusion, I stepped out and gasped some air. However, when I walked outside of the court, I was spotted by a beautiful women named Viviane Lacroix. She politely asked me why she was not able to attend the Meeting.

"The King has locked the doors to the Convocation. We are not allowed to attend the meeting."
"Why so?"
"He disagrees with our decision that we are his parliament now. So we are going to a different room in Versailles, and will make our own Assembly"
"I see..thank you. Monsieur, may I have your name?"
"Arnaud Petit"
"Monsieur Petit, may I go to this assembly also? I disagree with the King's actions also and would like it if I were to attend this important assembly"
"Ah, fair lady, although you seem like a kind noble, we are still not fond of them. I apologize but that would not be comfortable for the Third Estate."
"I see I've asked too much of you, Monsieur Petit. But thank you for your kindly time and declination."
"Your welcome, now I must go. Goodbye Mademoiselle."
"Farewell, Monsieur Petit."

I replied back that if that a noble attended this event, the third estate would be unhappy. She was very polite for a noble
to answer me back.

Diary 2

The night of August 4, 1789. It was the day where everything started. The noble men made grand speeches, declaring their love of liberty and equality of France. National assembly is sweeping away the feudal privileges of the First and Second estates, they were motivated more by fear than idealism. Three weeks later the national assembly came up with a document the declaration of the Rights of Man and of the Citizen.

What it angers me the most is that the National Assembly is trying to reform the church and make a state-controlled church. It made church officials and priests elected and paid as state officials. The effort to make the Church a part of the state offends us, the peasants and third estates. I believe that the pope should rule over a church independent of the state. Again, because of what King Louis XIV did again, I feel more betrayed by the country and the king. How can a King and the Queen of the country try to escape from this madness? I don’t believe that they should be staying in that position.

Gladly, after two years of argument, the National Assembly completed the new constitution which King Louis approved. It came to me that they worked hard to make the third estate the part of the country. They created a new legislative body that had the power to create laws and to approve or reject declarations of war. However, King Louis still has the power to veto whatever the legislative assembly does. Despite the new government, we the French people suffered from shortages of food and government debt. Legislative assembly had to split into three general groups. Radicals, wanted great changes in the way the government ran. Moderates were the guys that were not sure what to do and wanted a little change. On the other side, Conservatives wanted no changes or upheld the idea of a limited monarchy.

Diary 3

November 22nd, 1803

Napoleon seems to be a great general after all.. I changed my minds several times but I believe that he is helping our country to develop and rise. Napoleon Bonaparte was quite a short man. However, what a great man stood up for us. he was born in 1769 and became a lieutenant in the artillery when he was 16years old. Revolution broke out, and it was his chance to join the army of the new government. I was curious, even if you have a family, why would you want to give away the happiness and join an army to serve and die during battles? I just don’t understand. Well Napoleon was quite different, he had his chance for glory. When royalist rebels marched on the National Convention, a government officials told Napoleon to defend the delegates. Him and his crew gunners faced thousands of royalists. Luckily Napoleon was able to drive them out within few minutes. A year later, the government Directory appointed Napoleon to lead a French army against forces of Austria and the Kingdom of Sardina. He was still young however, he swept into Italy and won major battles and spread his name across Europe. Excited that he had been successful in Europe, he led another expedition to Egypt. He was not able to repeat the success in Africa. It still made Napoleon a hero because what he has achieved over the years.

He became the leader of our country just by pure luck. When Napoleon came back from Egypt and news of fail, The Directory already had lost its control of the political situation and the confidence of the French people. He had to think fast. Napoleon and his troops made the legislature to dissolve the Directory and soon after Napoleon Bonaparte became the leader, a dictator of our nation.

Napoleon did not try to return the nation to the days of Louis XVI. Gladly, he kept many of the changes that had come with the revolution. In general, he supported laws that would both strengthen and central government and achieve some of the goals of the revolution. He set up an efficient method of tax collection and established a national banking system. Napoleon wanted to get the economy on a solid footing. These actions promoted beter control of the economy. Well, on the other hand, he was pretty cocky about what he has done. He made the Napoleonic Code which made the country fine sets of laws and eliminated many injustices. Napoleon thinks that he has done a very good job of doing this but, It limits our liberty and authorities over individual rights.

After all, the so called “ Revolution” has helped our third estates. Like my other friends around the neighborhood were so cheerful about it. When revolution started, we all guessed that it was another rebellion against the country and we thought that they would die soon after. However, because of them it made our life pretty much easier to live. Revolution made France more strong, and united nation; made the people to enjoy their liberty and equalized the power of frist, second, and third estates of the nation.
